Is an oil painter, draughtswoman and fine art documentarian who listens deeply and watches the way the brush and charcoal carves shapes and patterns onto a surface. She is interested in portraying the strength, dignity and joy of people as they act out their lives in ordinary circumstances. Debra is also fascinated with how similar we are as human beings and likes to capture people’s common movements using simple shapes that have been built through many layers of paint and line. These shapes connect together in interlocking patterns and act as a metaphor for how we connect as people into one unified whole.
Debra is mainly a self taught artist. However, at the Cleveland Institute of Art, in Cleveland, Ohio, Debra did a year of intensive figure study using the live model. It is also where she met a mentor who advised her to learn by creating art continually and looking for help when needed. This is the path she has been on since, continually enriching her understanding of the world and art through self-study and a variety of workshops, classes, travel and teachers.
Debra shares her love of art in several ways. She has created murals with groups of people for their communities. Debra also runs creativity workshops and painting classes for both adults and children, out of her home studio, to support others on their own artistic journeys. Debra’s home and studio is in Durham, North Carolina where she lives with her husband, Joel and her dog, Tessa.
