So I did... But I didn't want to keep creating from the same place, I wanted to grow as an artist. Thus began the journey that lead me to a new studio in Hillsborough, NC, where I learned that, although a large space is nice, there is no place like home. Then off to California to study with an abstract figurative painter in the same school as Richard Diebenkorn: Linda Christensen. Linda graciously welcomed me into her studio for a week where she taught me to paint with a more muted palette and to layer paint to create texture, shape and emotional depth in my paintings. Here is a link to her website where you can enjoy her amazing work: http://www.lindachristensen.net/ Lastly, the year of studio work that taught me the value of painting hours every day and where I experimented with two different styles, one more abstract, the other based on texture.
This series of paintings, Coffee Talk, grew from that initial encouragement and a years worth of work. In the paintings I used people relating in coffee shops to create visual patterns as a metaphor for our connection to one another and our surroundings. This evening was another pattern of connection as poets, musicians and the paintings blended together to create a whole, new work of art.
