A Little About Me and My Paintings

When I was a small girl I liked to lie in the grass and look way up into the sky. The clouds passing overhead and their ever changing shapes were a source of endless delight. Every once in a while a jet would cross overhead and leave its white jet stream trail, lacing the clouds, the sky, the wind, the birds into an ever changing harmonious pattern.
I liked to imagine all the many times that the jets had passed over and how many different ways the sky had been carved into smaller complex patterns, layer upon layer upon invisible layer. There they were stacked one on top of each other and twisting into new interconnected patterns by the wind.
All grown up and an artist I know that when I draw a line on the canvas I am dividing the picture plane into two parts just as that jet stream divides the sky. As I continue to add lines I break the picture plane into smaller shapes that all interconnect to form a harmonious pattern clothed in color.
My work explores the open ended emotional resonance of interlocking shapes and color. These patterns tap into a deep desire we have as humans for order and the joy that shape and vibrant color communicates.
I like to think that each painting is a portal that allows us to transcend the ordinary and leads us into a child-like realm of spectacle and wonder. That just for a moment, as we stop to gaze at a painting, we can all become the child, gazing up and watching the clouds carve patterns in the sky.
